A new type of eye examination offers the ability to get physician-issued prescriptions online, for just $40.
This service, called Opternative, is the first of its kind. They allow consumers to take a complete eye exam in the comfort of their homes, using a computer and a smartphone.
Opternative said that the exams take just 25 minutes, and consumers receive their prescriptions within 24 hours. The cost is $40 for a prescription for glasses or contacts and $60 for both.
According to the company, a recent physician-led clinical trial found that prescriptions generated from Opternative’s eye exam software delivered statistically equivalent patient satisfaction and visual acuity to traditional in-office refractive eye exams.
Currently, these exams are available in 27 states, and are available for patients aged 18-40.
