Alternative salt maker Salt for Life has launched of the new “Practice Safe Salt” campaign to educate consumers about the importance of reducing sodium consumption, while still engaging in the pleasurable behavior in a healthier way.

There’s good reason for this: The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend limiting sodium to less than 2,300 milligrams a day. However, the average American consumes about 3,400 milligrams of sodium.

Salt is one of the most used cooking ingredients in the world and it’s easy to do it without even thinking about the risks.

This new campaign, led by NuTek Food Science, the parent company of Salt for Life, provides consumers with tools and resources to understand the health benefits of sodium replacement in the diet through an interactive new website: www.PracticeSafeSalt.com.

Think about this:

  • Research done by the American Heart Association claims that for the estimated one in three Americans who will develop high blood pressure, a high sodium diet may be to blame. This puts consumers at greater risk for stroke, heart failure, osteoporosis, stomach cancer, kidney disease and many other health-related issues.
  • Americans get most of their sodium—roughly 75 percent—from processed foods and eating outside the home, in often unsuspecting, hidden places. Six in 10 Americans ate dinner out at least once in the last seven days; Americans eat out five times a week on average.
  • Experts estimate that we could save 280,000 lives in the United States if we lowered the average daily sodium intake by 40 percent for the next 10 years. And that’s simply because lowering blood pressure protects the heart and the overall cardiovascular system.
  • Experts estimate that nearly $24 billion in healthcare costs could be saved annually by reducing the average American’s sodium consumption by 33%. It is estimated that California alone could save more than $2.4 billion annually.

The average American consumes approximately 2,600 milligrams of potassium each day—only 55 percent of the potassium they need. The FDA recommends a daily consumption target of 4,700 milligrams of potassium a day, and defines potassium as “a nutrient of need.”

People who lower sodium intake and increase potassium intake benefit from having lower blood pressure and reduce their risk for other serious health problems.
