Whether you like it or not, the world is becoming more and more dependent on technology. There’s the  Internet, debit cards, smartphones, email, apps, and we’re just getting started!  Technology invades almost every function of our daily lives, from communicating with a friend, family member, or colleague to grocery shopping or even watching television.

If you’re not up to speed, it can be a little overwhelming and maybe even a little scary. Not to mention the fact that many of today’s jobs require tech savvy employees. Let’s face it, technology is here to stay and it will only become more important as time goes on.  But have no fear! We’re here to help with a few tips for understanding new technology and using it to your advantage.  In no time at all, you’ll be well on your way to becoming technologically savvy.

 

The Internet is your friend – If you’re not sure what something is, how to spell a word or even what to make for dinner, you can search for it online. Our top Web sites for searching are Google, Bing and Yahoo.

 

There are tutorials for everything – When you get a new smartphone, tablet or other gadget, it can do a million different things to make your life more efficient. But if you don’t know what those things are, you can’t take advantage of them. Go through the available tutorials and take notes if you need to.

 

Ask a friend—Everyone seems to know a little bit about everything these days, so if there’s something you don’t understand, ask a friend. Side note: Don’t choose a smartphone or tablet because everyone else has one, choose the device that suits your needs.

 

Dropbox.com – This free site gives you online storage for your photos, documents, videos and more. You can securely share folders with friends and family, and access it anywhere you have an Internet connection.

 

Evernote – This handy app is a great place to store notes, checklists, screenshots, emails – basically anything you want to access can be readily at your fingertips. Keep your grocery list, notes from a webinar and your to-do list all in one place. The app can be downloaded on your laptop, PC, smartphone and tablet. Best of all, it’s free!

 

Knowledge is power – If you know more about it – its functionality, development or repair – you’ve put yourself in a better position that could even increase your job security as more and more functions become automated.

 

Relax – Don’t stress about knowing everything there is to know about technology. Chances are, it will change faster than you think it will, so learn the basics and go with the flow!
